Biography of Anna Castelli Ferrieri
Birth and education
Born in Milan on 6 August 1918, Anna Castelli Ferrieri graduated in architecture from the Milan Polytechnic in 1942, with a dissertation on the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. During the Second World War, she left Milan with her husband Giulio Castelli, a chemical engineer.
Career
She returned to Milan in 1946 and she founded her own architecture studio. In partnership with the architect Ignazio Gardella - designed buildings and city-planning projects. Furthermore, she became editor-in-chief of the architecture magazine, Casabella Costruzioni and Italian correspondent of the British magazine Architectural Design. In the 1980s, she became professor of Industrial Design at the Milan Polytechnic, and was involved in several urban planning projects, including Milan, Turin and Genoa.
Innovation
In 1949, together with Giulio Castelli, she founded Kartell, a company that pioneered the use of plastic for furniture production. This move proved to be revolutionary, introducing innovative materials into interior and furniture design. She was its Artistic Director until 1987. Throughout her career, Anna Castelli Ferrieri won two Compasso d'Oro awards, for the '4870' stackable chair, and for the 'Hannah' cutlery made for Sambonet.
