Anna Castelli Ferrieri est l'une des premières femmes à être diplômée du Politecnico di Milano. Anna Castelli Ferrieri - architecte, professeur et designer pour des marques comme Arflex, Sambonet, Ycami - est avant tout la "dame du plastique" : la directrice artistique et designer qui a influencé l'adresse de l'italien Kartell en déterminant l'orientation expérimentale actuelle. Sa collaboration avec l'entreprise fondée par son mari commence en 1966, jusqu'à l'utilisation, dans les années 70 et 80, de technologies avancées qui transforment le plastique en un matériau imprimable, malléable et expressif, décrétant le succès d'une marque d'avant-garde.

Biography of Anna Castelli Ferrieri

Birth and education

Born in Milan on 6 August 1918, Anna Castelli Ferrieri graduated in architecture from the Milan Polytechnic in 1942, with a dissertation on the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. During the Second World War, she left Milan with her husband Giulio Castelli, a chemical engineer.

Career

She returned to Milan in 1946 and she founded her own architecture studio. In partnership with the architect Ignazio Gardella - designed buildings and city-planning projects. Furthermore, she became editor-in-chief of the architecture magazine, Casabella Costruzioni and Italian correspondent of the British magazine Architectural Design. In the 1980s, she became professor of Industrial Design at the Milan Polytechnic, and was involved in several urban planning projects, including Milan, Turin and Genoa.

Innovation

In 1949, together with Giulio Castelli, she founded Kartell, a company that pioneered the use of plastic for furniture production. This move proved to be revolutionary, introducing innovative materials into interior and furniture design. She was its Artistic Director until 1987. Throughout her career, Anna Castelli Ferrieri won two Compasso d'Oro awards, for the '4870' stackable chair, and for the 'Hannah' cutlery made for Sambonet.
