Afternoon tea sets

Serving tea has an order of its own: you wait for it to brew, you carry everything through at once, you let people help themselves. It is a slower way of sitting at a table.

Here are the Sambonet pieces that hour actually calls for, chosen across the stainless steel and silver-plated collections.

Afternoon tea by Sambonet: how to lay out tea at home

Afternoon tea is built step by step, and each step has its piece. From brewing to the last cake, very little is needed: a teapot, what goes beside the cup, and something to raise the food off the table. Sambonet has been making these pieces in stainless steel since 1856, across collections with a recognisable formal language.

The order of things: from brewing to the cup

It starts with the tea. The leaves brew in the teapot and stay there while you pour, so choose the capacity for the number of people at the table — a slightly larger teapot beats a second brew halfway through. A jug of hot water sits alongside, to soften the tea once it has drawn too strong. Then come the things that go with the cup: a sugar bowl, or a honey pot for those who sweeten that way, and a milk jug, which in the tea tradition is part of the service rather than an extra. A tray holds it all together and carries the service through in one trip.

What goes on the table: cakes, fruit and savouries

Pastries and biscuits belong on the cake stands: the two-tier model builds upwards instead of outwards, keeps different kinds apart and leaves the table clear, while the version with individual plates serves portions already separated. If there is a cake rather than pastries, a single-tier stand is the right support, paired with a cake server for cutting. For fruit there are dedicated stands with deeper rims. Anyone who prefers savoury brings finger sandwiches, served on a tray or on the lower tier: by custom the savouries sit below and the sweet above, because that is the order they are eaten in. Cake forks handle the slices, teaspoons the stirring.

Stainless steel, silver plate and everyday care

Stainless steel keeps its shine and holds no odour or flavour from the brew — which matters when the same teapot moves from a black tea to a scented one. Silver-plated pieces and silver-plated alpacca are treated like stainless steel, with one caution: no abrasive products, and no metal or synthetic scourers, which damage the silver layer permanently. The finishes available — mirror steel, silver plate, PVD gold and champagne, vintage — let you build a matching service or mix pieces across collections. FAQ – Afternoon Tea by Sambonet

Brew the tea in the teapot and bring it to the table with the cups, a sugar bowl or honey pot, and a milk jug. Keep a jug of hot water alongside to soften the brew. Sweet things go on the tiered stand, savouries on a tray. A serving tray lets you carry the whole service through in one trip.
Pastries and biscuits are the usual choice, arranged on a cake stand. A cake on a single-tier stand works just as well, as does fresh fruit. For something savoury, small finger sandwiches: by custom these are eaten first, before anything sweet.
Fill it from the bottom up, in the order things are eaten: savouries on the lower tier, sweet on the upper. It is the traditional format for afternoon tea because it builds upwards and leaves the table clear. A stand with individual plates serves portions already separated instead.
A sugar bowl or honey pot, a milk jug, a jug of hot water and a tray for carrying. A cake stand for the pastries, and a cake server if there is a cake to cut. Then teaspoons and cake forks, available in sets of six.
The same way as stainless steel, but without abrasive products and without metal or synthetic scourers, which would damage the silver layer permanently. For instructions on a specific item, including washing compatibility, see its product page.
