Discover the beauty of PVD colours technology

PVD Colours cutting-edge technology adds a vibrant and durable finish to our classic cutlery designs, creating a stunning and contemporary aesthetic.

PVD COLOURS

Precious shades

The PVD process – Physical Vapour Deposition – is a special treatment that gives the objects made of stainless-steel precious colors and trendy nuances. The coating is atomically welded to stainless steel, giving it great hardness and resistance. This is an exclusive process that Sambonet carries out internally and on which it focuses numerous resources in terms of research and development, using a cutting-edge technology.

The technology behind exclusive Sambonet colouring

PVD is a sophisticated coating process that results in a highly durable, scratch-resistant, and colorfast finish that maintains its luster over time.

How is the PVD colouring treatment achieved?

  • At first, the stainless-steel pieces undergo a series of washings in water with controlled saline content. Through an ultrasonic rinsing system, we obtain objects with a level of purity equal to the pharmaceutical one. The latter are then put on special frames and placed in a chamber designed to create vacuum. The remaining processing residues are eliminated thanks to a cryogenic trap that crystallizes gases and vapours.
  • At this stage, objects inside the vacuum chamber are negatively loaded to increase their attractiveness. An electric discharge, e.g. arc, strikes the targets – metal blocks of different nature placed inside the chamber – sublimating their surface.
  • This sublimation process frees the metal particles which make a layer on the cutlery or on any other stainless-steel items inside the chamber, determining their coloring. Thanks to the negative charge of the objects, the metal particles are atomically welded to the stainless-steel substrate, giving the material additional hardness.

Sambonet PVD is a registered know-how

The Sambonet PVD treatment is a registered know-how, Num. 114361, and it is carried out in Italy in our Orfengo factory: the evidence of Sambonet's continuous technological research.

Technology for aesthetics, durability and environment

ATOMIC LEVEL PROCESSING

Flatware is not "coloured"

We have spent a lot of time searching for a solution to make our coloured finishes resistant and everlasting. And we have found it. Since then, we have been creating products with unique shades in order to give you the freedom to color your table as you wish.

SUSTAINABILITY

Better environmental performance

The PVD finish also allows a better environmental performance. The innovative and sustainable aspect of this technique also lies in encouraging the reduction of the use of chemical substances such as cyanides and acid solutions, which are more used in galvanic processes.

What are the advantages of PVD cutlery and holloware?

The development of fascinating shades of colour, constantly evolving, offers new possibilities for table setting and contemporary lifestyle.

  • The objects acquire high resistance to wear and scratches, maintaining a uniform appearance over time.
  • The particles welded at atomic level to the stainless-steel substrate of the objects create a "barrier effect" that guarantees a non-toxic product in compliance with the European standards about migration limits of chrome, manganese and nickel. The tolerability of those who have contact allergies to nickel is higher.
  • The manufacturing process is environmentally friendly: no pollutants or toxic residues are produced at any stage of the production.
  • Sambonet's PVD technology is completely Made in Italy.
  • PVD items are made of the best stainless steel, are food contact safe, and are dishwasher-safe.

FAQ Section: Sambonet PVD Colours Technology

What is PVD technology in Sambonet products?

PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) is an advanced surface coating process applied to 18/10 stainless steel items. This technology gives Sambonet products their unique colors and brilliance while improving key physical and mechanical properties, such as increased surface hardness, high resistance to micro-abrasions, superior heat resistance, and protection against oxidation.

What are the benefits of PVD coating on Sambonet stainless steel?

PVD coating enhances:

  • Surface hardness, reducing risk of scratches and micro-abrasions.
  • Resistance to high temperatures, making items more durable.
  • Resistance to oxidation, preserving the appearance and performance over time.
  • Additionally, it provides a wide range of vibrant, original colors that are long-lasting and visually stunning.

Can the color of PVD-coated items vary between products?

Yes, slight chromatic variations or differences may occur between different models, series, or batches. These variations are normal and result from geometry, size, finishing, coating, and ambient light. However, Sambonet ensures all differences remain within strict, pre-established tolerance limits and are closely monitored.

How should I clean and maintain PVD-coated Sambonet items?

  • Daily cleaning: Wash by hand or in a dishwasher with a highly diluted, delicate liquid detergent.
  • Hand washing: Always rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft, clean cloth.
  • Dishwasher: If the cycle does not include drying, dry manually after washing. Do not leave items in the dishwasher after the wash cycle ends.
  • General care: Only use soft cloths. Avoid steel scourers, abrasive sponges, powders, or steel burnishing machines, as these can damage the PVD layer.

How do I remove stains or marks from PVD-coated products?

For potential stains (such as lime scale or detergent residue), soak the item in hot water. For particularly stubborn marks, add a glass of vinegar to the soaking water. Avoid prolonged contact with aggressive food products like tomato, mayonnaise, eggs, coffee, red wine, salt, and vinegar.

Is PVD coating environmentally friendly?

Yes. As described on the Sambonet PVD Colours Technology page, PVD is an eco-friendly, sustainable process. It does not produce hazardous waste or involve chemicals that are harmful to people or the environment.

Will PVD colors fade or wear off over time?

PVD coatings are extremely durable and resistant to wear, but as with all surface treatments, proper care is essential. If cleaned and maintained correctly, the color and brilliance will last for a very long time.
